Heavy rain continued to lash north India
disrupting normal life and causing water levels of major rivers to rise. In
Uttarakhand, the pilgrimage to Gangotri shrine remained suspended for the second
consecutive day on Sunday as landslides triggered by heavy rain blocked road
traffic. Moderate to rather heavy rainfall lashed several parts of the state
where major rivers Ganga and Yamuna are flowing near danger mark. Met department
has predicted more rain in the state during the next 24 hours. In Uttar
Pradesh,flood like situation prevailed at a number of places following heavy
rain. Gorakhpur received maximum 150.2 mm rain since Saturday. Water level in
Ganga river has started rising at Allahabad, Mirzapur and Varanasi and flowing
near danger mark at Gumtia Kannauj, Ankinghat at Kanpur dehat. Yamuna is flowing
above danger mark in Mathura and rising in Agra, Kalpi, Hamirpur and Naini.
Heavy rain lashed several parts of the national Capital on Monday morning. The
downpour had thrown the life out of gear in Delhi on Sunday also. There were
traffic jams at many places following water logging. Met office has warned
Delhiites of more rain.
Several areas in the desert state of
Rajasthan also received showers with Chittorgarh recording maximum rainfall of
127 mm till last evening. Dabok, Jodhpur and Pilani also experienced rainfall.
Himachal Pradesh was also lashed by heavy rain, causing marginal fall in mercury
in some parts of the hill state. The state capital Shimla received 70 mm of
rains till last evening, bringing down the maximum temperature from 22 degree to
19.6 degrees. Dharamsala, Sundernagar and Mandi also received rainall. Punjab
and Haryana, by and large, remained dry even as the Met office predicted
moderate to rather heavy rainfall at a few places in the region in next couple
of days. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah has alerted the officials to
closely monitor flood situation in the state and take all precautionary measures
to minimise the loss of property and crops. The state as a whole has recorded
660 mm rainfall so far as against the normal rainfall of 504.9 mm. The Met
predicted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the districts of Adilabad,
Khammam, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Warangal of Telangana and over coastal Andhra
region in the next two days.
